Vance fading near Los Cabos as East Cape beaches start to reopen
Five East Cape zones moved from black flag to red flag as Tropical Depression Vance weakens, with a calmer, mostly dry weekend ahead for Los Cabos.
Beaches reopening, East Cape first
Los Cabos is coming out of the storm in good shape. The Lobo Los Cabos newsdesk reports that roads are being fixed and beaches are starting to reopen, with the East Cape leading the way.
Beaches are still under restrictions today. A total of 31 zones are flagged and none are green. Of those, 26 are black flag, which means closed, including El Médano, Santa María, Chileno and Las Viudas. El Tule, Migriño, Palmilla, Acapulquito, Costa Azul and the hotel beaches are also black flag.
The good news came yesterday, when five East Cape zones moved up from black flag to red flag: La Ribera, El Surgidero, El Dátil/Capilla, Spa Buena Vista and La Gaviota. Red flag still means no swimming, and black flag means closed. Surfers should sit it out where the flag is black. Check the flag and follow Protección Civil.
Tropics
As of the National Hurricane Center's 2 PM advisory, Tropical Depression Vance was about 95 miles east-southeast of Cabo San Lucas, with winds of 35 mph, moving north at 7 mph. There are no coastal watches or warnings.
The NHC expects Vance to become a post-tropical remnant low this evening and to dissipate tonight or early Friday. The NHC also says its swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip currents in southern Baja for the next day or so. Its rain is still soaking the mainland, and the rest of the tropics are quiet.
Tomorrow's weather
Sunset tonight is at 5:43 PM. It is 79°F (26°C) and cloudy at 6 PM, then skies clear, with 73°F (23°C) by 10 PM and a low of 71°F (22°C).
Friday brings a few light showers, a high of 85°F (29°C), a low of 71°F (22°C) and a south-southwest wind near 9 mph. The water is 88°F (31°C). Saturday looks partly cloudy at 84°F (29°C), and Sunday reaches 86°F (30°C).
Surf and Spot Check
The ocean is finally calming down. NOAA's wave model shows a little over 2 ft at 6 seconds from the southeast tomorrow morning, and dropping.
By spot, Cerritos is about 2 ft, the Corridor a little over 2 ft and the East Cape about 2 ft. These are offshore model numbers, not breaking waves at the beach, so check your spot. Black flag beaches stay closed.
Fishing
Gordo Banks Pangas' report from Sunday said tuna were spotty, but one charter landed a 180 pound tuna at Vinorama, and the Inner Gordo had tuna action over the weekend. Water is around 88°F (31°C).
Tomorrow night brings a waning gibbous moon, and the morning looks calm, with light wind and a small swell. The 8th Copa Presidente Marlini for local fishers has a guaranteed prize pool of 1 million pesos for dorado, wahoo and tuna. Registration is Saturday and fishing day is Sunday.
Peso check
Market rates today put 1 U.S. dollar at about 18.75 pesos and 1 Canadian dollar at about 13.4 pesos. Shops and exchange houses in town usually give a bit less, so check first.
Qué Pasa Cabo
Saturday is Halloween at Sancho's on the marina between K and L Dock, from 9 AM to 11 PM. Expect college football, a Spookeasy cocktail menu and trick-or-treat candy stations on the deck at 5 PM.

Written from public weather, marine and hurricane data and the organizers' own reports. Surf numbers are offshore model readings, not breaking waves. For official alerts, follow Protección Civil Los Cabos. Got something happening? Tell Lobo.
