Tropics

Hurricane Vance is a long way from Los Cabos. According to the National Hurricane Center's afternoon advisory, Vance is a Category 2 hurricane with winds of 105 mph, about 950 miles south-southeast of Cabo and moving northwest at 5 mph.

The NHC expects Vance to become a major hurricane tonight, then slowly weaken Saturday night and Sunday while moving slowly north-northwest or northwest. No coastal watches or warnings are in effect right now, and the Lobo Los Cabos newsroom will keep following the storm every night.

Weekend weather

Saturday, October 24, brings showers, a high of 86°F and a low of 74°F, with a light south-southeast breeze around 6 mph. Water temperature is 89°F.

Sunday turns to heavy rain with a high of 89°F. Monday is partly cloudy, also around 89°F. If Sunday's rain comes down hard, take it slow on the roads and skip any flooded dips.

Surf and Spot Check

NOAA's wave model has Saturday morning's swell at about 3.7 ft at 10 seconds from the west-northwest and building. A southeast swell near 7 ft is forecast by Sunday.

On the Pacific side, Cerritos shows the most at about 3.8 ft. The Corridor is at about 2.8 ft and the East Cape about 1.2 ft. These are offshore model numbers, not breaking waves at the beach, so check your spot. If Sunday's swell comes in big, stay out of the water unless you are experienced.

Fishing and Black & Blue

Water is 89°F, and Saturday night's moon is nearly full, with the full moon two days away. With light wind and a modest swell, the morning looks fairly calm.

Friday was the final fishing day of Bisbee's Black & Blue out of the Cabo San Lucas marina. Per Bisbee's, the bite has been slow. On Thursday, 13 marlin were caught, all but one released, and Never Say Never led with two blues, pending video confirmation.

The biggest fish is still the 491-pound blue caught on day one by Cantango Spartan's Revenge, worth $1.9 million, Bisbee's says. Awards are Saturday. Friday's results post late, so they will be reported Saturday night.

Baja 1000 pre-running

Mexico News Daily reports that Baja 1000 pre-running starts Saturday. Teams will scout the course up the East Cape and down the Pacific side, so drive carefully and give race vehicles room. The race itself starts on Avenida Centenario in San José del Cabo on November 13.

Peso check

As of Friday, a U.S. dollar buys about 18.8 pesos and a Canadian dollar about 13.4, a bit more than last week. Those are market rates. Cash houses and shops in town usually give a little less, so check first.

Coming up in Los Cabos

Día de Muertos celebrations on Playa El Médano in Cabo San Lucas are eight days away, running October 31 to November 3. The PGA TOUR's World Wide Technology Championship follows at El Cardonal at Diamante, with official play from November 5 to 8.

Written from public weather, marine and hurricane data and the organizers' own reports. Surf numbers are offshore model readings, not breaking waves. For official alerts, follow Protección Civil Los Cabos. Got something happening? Tell Lobo.
