Beginner's luck at Black & Blue

A team fishing the Bisbee's Black & Blue for the first time took Day One of the tournament out of the Cabo San Lucas marina. According to Bisbee's, Cantango Spartan's Revenge landed a 491-pound marlin worth 1.9 million dollars in prize money. A Bluish Hue won the Day One releases.

Friday is the last fishing day. The public weigh station at Puerto Paraíso is open 2 to 9 PM, and the awards are Saturday.

Tropics

Tropical Storm Vance is a long way from Los Cabos. As of the National Hurricane Center's afternoon advisory, it has winds of 65 mph and sits about 490 miles south-southwest of Acapulco, roughly 1,050 miles from Los Cabos. It is moving west-northwest at about 5 mph, and NHC expects a slow turn toward the northwest and north-northwest over the next few days.

NHC says Vance should become a hurricane tonight and could become a major hurricane by the weekend, with a fair amount of uncertainty in how strong it gets. No coastal watches or warnings are in effect.

For the coast of southern and southwestern Mexico, NHC says swells from Vance should start arriving this weekend, likely causing life-threatening surf and rip currents. Residents there should follow their local weather office.

Tomorrow's weather

Friday brings some showers, a high of 89°F and a low of 75°F, with a light southeast breeze around 7 mph. The water is a warm 89°F.

Saturday looks showery with a high of 87°F, and Sunday is showery with a high of 90°F.

Surf and Spot Check

NOAA's wave model shows small surf tomorrow morning, but it is building. Open water off the Cape shows about 2.6 ft at 5 seconds from the west-northwest.

On the Pacific side, Cerritos shows the most at about 2.8 ft. The Corridor, including Zippers and Old Man's, shows about 1.9 ft. The East Cape is around 1 ft from the west-southwest.

These are offshore model numbers, not what is breaking at the beach, so check your spot before you paddle out.

Fishing

Water temperature is 89°F, and tomorrow night's moon is waxing gibbous, three days from full. Light wind and a small swell should make for a pretty calm morning on the water.

Peso check

One U.S. dollar buys about 18.8 pesos, and one Canadian dollar about 13.4. Both go a little further than last week, the Canadian dollar a bit more.

Those are market rates. Cash exchange houses and shops in town usually give a bit less, so check before you swap.

Coming up in Los Cabos

Baja 1000 pre-running starts this Saturday, according to Mexico News Daily. Race teams will scout the 964-mile Cabo to Cabo course, up the East Cape and back down the Pacific side. Expect race vehicles on dirt roads and highways along the route, and drive carefully and give them room. The race itself starts and finishes on Avenida Centenario in San José del Cabo on November 13.

Sancho's is celebrating its 10th anniversary today, from 9 AM to 11 PM, on the Cabo San Lucas marina between K and L Dock. Mike Grabow plays at 4 and Victoria Stones at 7, and limited-edition swag is on hand.

Día de Muertos celebrations run October 31 to November 3 on Playa El Médano in Cabo San Lucas.
