Los Cabos has no tropical alerts as Trudy stays on the mainland coast
Hurricane Trudy is about 490 miles southeast, with no watches or warnings for Baja California Sur, while a big swell and Bisbee's marlin headline the weekend.
Tropics
As of the National Hurricane Center's 3 PM Central time advisory Saturday, there are no watches or warnings for Baja California Sur. Hurricane Trudy is a Category 2 storm with top winds of 100 mph. She is about 115 miles south-southwest of Manzanillo and about 490 miles southeast of Los Cabos, moving northwest at 10 mph.
According to the NHC, Trudy will pass near the coast of southwestern and west-central Mexico tonight and Sunday, then turn west-northwest Sunday night, away from the coast. The NHC expects a peak near 105 mph tonight, then steady weakening: about 80 mph by late Sunday, 65 mph on Monday and a remnant low by Wednesday.
What's posted on the mainland
Mexico has a Hurricane Warning from Manzanillo northward to Cabo Corrientes and a Hurricane Watch from south of Manzanillo to Punta San Telmo. Tropical Storm Warnings are up to San Blas, Lázaro Cárdenas and Las Islas Marías.
The NHC expects 4 to 8 inches of rain, with isolated totals of 12 inches, in Michoacán, Colima and Jalisco, which may bring life-threatening flooding and mudslides. Anyone with family or friends on that coast may want to check in on them tonight.
Tomorrow's weather
Sunday looks partly cloudy with a high of 92°F and a low of 74°F. Winds are light from the south-southeast at around 7 mph, and the water is 88°F.
Monday brings showers and a high of 90°F, and Tuesday warms to 91°F.
Surf and Spot Check
There is real swell on the way. NOAA's wave model shows about 8 ft offshore tomorrow morning at 14 seconds from the south-southeast, holding steady.
On the Pacific side near Cerritos, the model shows about 7 ft at 15 seconds. The Corridor, including Zippers and Punta Perfecta, shows the most of the three areas at 14 seconds. The East Cape, around La Fortuna and Nine Palms, shows about 7 ft at 15 seconds.
These are offshore model numbers, not what is breaking at the beach, so check your spot. With swell this size, stay out if you are not experienced.
Fishing
Water temperature is 88°F, and tomorrow night is a first quarter moon, 8 days from full. Winds should be light in the morning, but the big swell means a bumpy ride out.
Bisbee's Los Cabos Offshore wraps up today at the Cabo San Lucas marina, and Friday's weigh-in was a wild one. According to Bisbee's, Tiki Perro Pescador's 350 pound blue marlin jumped to the top of the leaderboard, ahead of Loose Crew's 347 pounder, with nearly 2.4 million dollars in prize money at stake.
Bisbee's Black & Blue starts Monday out of the Cabo San Lucas marina, with the weigh-in at the scales every evening.
Peso check
As of Friday, a U.S. dollar buys about 18.4 pesos and a Canadian dollar about 13, both a little more than last week. Those are market rates. Exchange houses and shops usually give a bit less, so check first.
Coming up in Los Cabos
Further out, Día de Muertos celebrations start October 31 at Playa El Médano. The World Wide Technology Championship PGA TOUR event runs November 2 to 8 at El Cardonal at Diamante. The SCORE Baja 1000 starts and finishes on Avenida Centenario in San José del Cabo from November 9, with crowds and road closures expected.
