Simon's final advisory

Simon is on its way out. The National Hurricane Center now calls it the remnants of Simon, and its afternoon advisory, issued at 2 p.m. local time, was the last one.

The system sits about 100 miles south-southwest of Cabo San Lucas with winds near 35 mph, moving northwest at 13 mph. There are no coastal watches or warnings. According to the NHC, Simon should run parallel to the coast and fall apart by late tonight or early tomorrow morning.

Surf and rip current warning

The NHC says Simon's swells could affect parts of Baja California Sur over the next day or so, likely causing life-threatening surf and rip currents.

Anyone who is not an experienced swimmer should stay out of the water. Rip currents are dangerous even for strong swimmers. Lobo's tip for the morning: watch the ocean from the sand.

Hurricane Trudy aims for the mainland

Trudy is a Category 1 hurricane with winds near 85 mph. It is about 225 miles southwest of Acapulco and roughly 740 miles southeast of Los Cabos, moving north-northwest at 5 mph. The NHC forecasts a turn to the northwest at a bit faster speed. It should approach the coast of southwestern and west-central Mexico Saturday and pass near it Saturday night into Sunday.

The NHC says slight strengthening is possible Saturday and Saturday night. After that it expects steady weakening, a track more west-northwest, and eventually a remnant low.

Warnings on the mainland

The NHC lists a Hurricane Warning from Manzanillo north to Cabo Corrientes, a Hurricane Watch from Manzanillo south to Punta San Telmo, and a Tropical Storm Warning from Manzanillo south to Zihuatanejo. A Tropical Storm Watch runs north of Cabo Corrientes to San Blas.

The NHC expects 4 to 8 inches of rain, with isolated totals around 15 inches, in Michoacán, Colima and Jalisco. It says the rain may bring life-threatening flooding and mudslides, and more warnings are likely tonight. Many people in Los Cabos have family and friends on that coast, so tonight is a good time to check in.

Tomorrow's weather

Saturday, October 17, looks calm at home: partly cloudy, a high of 88°F and a low of 75°F, with a light east-southeast wind around 7 mph and no rain in the forecast. The water is about 88°F.

Sunday should reach 92°F and Monday 90°F.

Fishing and Bisbee's

Fishing conditions include light wind around 7 mph and 88°F water. Tomorrow night brings a first quarter moon, nine days from full. Anglers should keep Simon's leftover swell in mind.

Bisbee's Los Cabos Offshore is under way out of the Cabo San Lucas marina. According to Bisbee's, after Thursday Team Trixie leads with a 334 pound black marlin. Diggin Bills weighed a 302 pound blue marlin, and PrimeTime has a 46.5 pound dorado.

Coming up in Los Cabos

Bisbee's Black & Blue starts Monday, October 19, at the same marina and runs through October 24. Check with the organizers for any weather changes.

Día de Muertos celebrations run October 31 to November 3 at Playa El Médano. The World Wide Technology Championship PGA TOUR event is at El Cardonal at Diamante from November 2 to 8, with official play Thursday through Sunday. The SCORE Baja 1000 follows November 9 to 15, starting and finishing on Avenida Centenario in San José del Cabo for the first time, with crowds and road closures expected.
