Tropics: Simon passes southwest of the tip

Tropical Storm Simon is expected to move away from Baja California Sur this weekend, but not before bringing a wet, wavy end to the week. As of the National Hurricane Center's 2 PM advisory, Simon had 50 mph winds and sat about 270 miles south-southeast of Cabo San Lucas, drifting northwest at 1 mph.

According to the NHC, Simon should speed up to the northwest starting Friday and pass southwest of the tip, out over open water. It is forecast to weaken to about 40 mph late Friday morning, 35 mph by Friday night, and become a remnant low this weekend. The NHC says the track has been tough to forecast, though the models now agree better, and Simon could weaken even sooner.

Through early Saturday, the NHC expects 1 to 2 inches of rain, with isolated amounts of 3 inches, over portions of Baja California Sur. The NHC says Simon's swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip currents in Baja California Sur. There are no coastal watches or warnings.

Safety and local advisories

Rain is the main hazard at home. Arroyos and road dips fill fast, so never drive or walk through moving water or a flooded arroyo, and stay out of floodwater. Charge phones, keep water and a flashlight handy, and follow Protección Civil.

As of Wednesday, the state Civil Protection Council kept small boats restricted at the ports of Los Cabos and La Paz, and it was set to meet again Thursday night at 8. Also as of Wednesday, no beach closures had been reported, but state Civil Protection warned of high surf and rip currents. Los Cabos Protección Civil says not to cross arroyos.

Tomorrow's weather

Friday brings showers, a high of 90°F and a low of 75°F, with an east-northeast wind around 13 mph. The water is 88°F.

Saturday stays showery at 90°F and 76°F. Sunday turns partly cloudy, with a high of 92°F and a low of 74°F.

Surf and Spot Check

The ocean is waking up. NOAA's wave model has Friday morning at 5.6 ft offshore at 19 seconds from the south-southwest, building to about 9.5 ft early Saturday.

Spot check: Cerritos on the Pacific side shows 5.5 ft. The Corridor, including Zippers and Punta Perfecta, leads at 5.6 ft. East Cape, at La Fortuna and Nine Palms, shows 5 ft.

These are offshore model numbers, not what is breaking at the beach, so check your spot. With big, stormy surf on the way, anyone without experience should stay out of the water.

Fishing and Bisbee's

Water temperature is 88°F, and a waxing crescent moon rises tomorrow night, 10 days from full. With a 13 mph breeze and a building swell, the morning looks bumpy.

The Bisbee's Los Cabos Offshore is under way out of the Cabo San Lucas marina. Per Bisbee's, Wednesday's top fish was Alex Moherek's 102.3 pound yellowfin. Linda Gale led releases with 925 points.

Coming up in Los Cabos

Bisbee's Black & Blue starts in four days, on Monday, October 19, also out of the Cabo San Lucas marina. Check with the organizers for any weather changes.

Farther out, the SCORE Baja 1000 starts and finishes on Avenida Centenario in San José del Cabo for the first time, running November 9 to 15. Expect crowds and road closures.

Trudy, to the southeast

Farther away, Hurricane Trudy is a Category 1 storm with 90 mph winds, south-southwest of Acapulco and moving north-northwest at 6 mph. The NHC forecasts rapid intensification, with a major hurricane Friday or Friday night, approaching the coast of southwestern and west-central Mexico on Saturday.

Mexico has a Hurricane Watch north of Punta San Telmo to Playa Perula, and a Tropical Storm Warning from Punta San Telmo south to Zihuatanejo. Anyone with family or travel plans in that region should stay tuned.
