Tropics

Bisbee's Los Cabos Offshore is under way, and the tropics are the other story this week. As of the 5 PM advisory, Hurricane Simon is a Category 1 storm with 90 mph winds, about 245 miles southeast of Cabo, west of Cabo Corrientes. It is a tiny hurricane, drifting west at just 2 mph.

The National Hurricane Center expects Simon to wander slowly for a couple of days, then turn north late this week and weaken. That could bring it closer to Baja California Sur up the Gulf of California, but the possible tracks are still all over the place. A Hurricane Watch is up for Las Islas Marías. Simon could bring 1 to 2 inches of rain, with isolated amounts of 3 inches, over parts of Baja California Sur, Nayarit and Sinaloa by Friday.

There is no need to panic, but stay alert. Watch for new alerts and follow Protección Civil.

Farther south, Tropical Storm Trudy has 40 mph winds and sits about 1,225 miles away. The Hurricane Center expects it to become a major hurricane by Friday.

Tomorrow's weather

Wednesday, October 14, brings showers, a high of 89°F, a low of 74°F and a light east-northeast breeze around 6 mph. Sunset is at 5:54 PM. The water is 86°F.

Thursday and Friday stay showery, with highs of 91°F and 92°F. Expect it to be hot and a little wet.

Surf and Spot Check

NOAA's wave model shows about 7.7 ft at 17 seconds from the west-northwest tomorrow morning, and the swell is dropping. The Corridor shows the most among the spots, at 7.2 ft at 16 seconds. These are offshore model numbers, not what is breaking at the beach, so check your spot before you paddle out.

That is big water. If it is over your head, stay on the sand and watch for rip currents.

Fishing

Water temperature is 86°F. Tomorrow night is a waxing crescent moon, 12 days from full. The wind looks light in the morning, but with that big swell out there, the water will not be flat.

Coming up in Los Cabos

Bisbee's Los Cabos Offshore is on now out of the Cabo San Lucas marina, running through Saturday, October 17. Each fishing day ends with the evening weigh-in at the scales. Per Bisbee's, Black & Blue, the famous marlin tournament, starts in six days, on Monday, October 19, and runs through Saturday, October 24.

Further out, the SCORE Baja 1000 starts and finishes on Avenida Centenario in San José del Cabo for the first time, from November 9 to 15. Expect crowds and road closures. The race start is Friday, November 13, with motorcycles at 1 AM and cars, trucks and side by sides at 9 AM.

Written from public weather, marine and hurricane data and the organizers' own reports. Surf numbers are offshore model readings, not breaking waves. For official alerts, follow Protección Civil Los Cabos. Got something happening? Tell Lobo.
