Hurricane Simon Spins Off the Mainland as Los Cabos Stays Calm
Simon is a Category 2 hurricane about 275 miles southeast of Cabo San Lucas, while Tuesday in Los Cabos looks partly cloudy with a high of 89°F.
Tropics: Simon holds near Cabo Corrientes
Hurricane Simon is a Category 2 storm with max winds of 100 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center's 2 p.m. advisory Monday. It sits about 75 miles west of Cabo Corrientes, roughly 275 miles southeast of Cabo San Lucas, and is moving west-northwest at 3 mph.
The forecast calls for a slow northwest drift tonight into early Tuesday, then a gradual turn to the northeast. Simon should be near Las Islas Marias tonight into Tuesday, then approach the west-central Mexico coast Wednesday into Thursday. It may weaken a bit, then could strengthen some by Wednesday. The Hurricane Center calls it a low confidence track, so Lobo and the newsroom will keep watching.
Warnings for the mainland
A Hurricane Warning is up for Las Islas Marias, and a Hurricane Watch runs from Cabo Corrientes to Bahia Tempehuaya. The tropical storm warning from Playa Perula to Cabo Corrientes is discontinued.
Hurricane conditions are likely in Las Islas Marias tonight into Tuesday, with tropical storm conditions possible in the watch area by Tuesday night. Rain totals of 5 to 10 inches are expected across coastal west-central Mexico, with up to 15 inches in spots over Sinaloa by Thursday. Simon's swells could bring life-threatening surf and rip currents to that coast. Follow Protección Civil for mainland updates.
Tomorrow's weather
Back home, it looks pretty chill. Tuesday, October 13, brings partly cloudy skies, a high of 89°F and a low of 73°F, with a light east-southeast wind around 7 mph and no rain expected. Water temperature is a toasty 87°F.
Wednesday brings some showers with a high near 89°F. Thursday eases to 87°F.
Surf and Spot Check
NOAA's wave model shows about 6.5 ft at 20 seconds out of the west-northwest Tuesday morning, in open water just south of the Cape, and holding steady. Those are offshore model numbers, not the height of waves breaking at the beach, so check your spot before you paddle out.
Written from public weather, marine and hurricane data and the organizers' own reports. Surf numbers are offshore model readings, not breaking waves. For official alerts, follow Protección Civil Los Cabos. Got something happening? Tell Lobo.
