Hurricane Simon stays away from Los Cabos as Monday looks easy
Simon is a Category 4 hurricane off Manzanillo and is not forecast to affect Los Cabos. Monday brings partly cloudy skies, a high of 87°F and 88°F water.
Tropics
Hurricane Simon is a big storm on the mainland coast tonight, and it is not forecast to affect Los Cabos. As of the 3 p.m. Central time advisory, Simon is a Category 4 hurricane with maximum winds of 130 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center.
The storm is about 105 miles west-northwest of Manzanillo and roughly 350 miles southeast of Los Cabos. It is moving north-northwest at 6 mph.
Simon brushes the coast of west-central Mexico this evening, slides a little farther offshore Monday, then turns back toward the coast Wednesday. It should weaken some but stay a hurricane.
Warnings on the mainland
A Hurricane Warning is in effect from Punta San Telmo to El Roblito and Las Islas Marías. A Hurricane Watch covers the area north of El Roblito to Bahía Tempehuaya.
Parts of Colima, Jalisco, Nayarit and Sinaloa can expect 2 to 4 more inches of rain, with isolated amounts of 8 inches, through early Thursday. Storm totals could reach 30 inches in spots in Michoacán, Colima and Jalisco. That means life-threatening flooding and mudslides.
In the watch area, tropical storm conditions are possible by Tuesday night and hurricane conditions by Wednesday. Neighbors on the mainland should follow Protección Civil.
Rachel's waves in Baja Norte
The remnants of Rachel are over the southwestern U.S., about 935 miles from Los Cabos. The 8 a.m. Mountain time advisory was the last one.
Even so, Rachel's waves are still hitting northern Baja California. Life-threatening surf, rip currents and coastal flooding are expected over the next few days. Lobo's advice for anyone along that coast is to stay off the rocks.
