Baja 1000 pre-running begins near Los Cabos; Vance stays far away
Race teams are scouting the Cabo to Cabo course, Hurricane Vance is far to the southeast, and Sunday looks sunny and warm with a building swell.
Tonight's report
¡Buenas noches, Los Cabos! Lobo here, live from the rock, and tonight's show is presented by East Cape Concierge. Tonight, a hurricane way down south, race trucks on our roads, and one very big marlin!
First up, the tropics. Hurricane Vance is out there, but it's a long way from our little tip of the rock.
As of NHC's three p.m. Central advisory, Vance is a Category one with ninety mile an hour winds, about seven hundred ninety miles southeast of Cabo, southwest of Acapulco.
It's crawling north-northwest at six miles an hour. NHC expects more weakening through Sunday night, with some re-intensification possible Monday.
No watches or warnings for Los Cabos, and NHC's outlook shows nothing else brewing. We'll keep watching it for you.
Our neighbors on the mainland are the ones to think about tonight.
NHC says four to six inches of rain, isolated ten, across Colima and western Michoacán and Jalisco through next Thursday, with possible life-threatening flooding and mudslides.
No coastal watches yet, but NHC says a Tropical Storm Watch may be needed for parts of the southwestern coast of Mexico tonight or Sunday.
If you've got family over there, give them a call tonight.
Back home, big news for the East Cape and the Pacific side.
Mexico News Daily reports Baja one thousand pre-running started today. Teams are scouting the Cabo to Cabo course, up the East Cape and back down past Todos Santos and El Pescadero.
So if you see a race truck on the highway or a dirt road, drive carefully and give them room, amigos.
I checked the waves, the wind and my tan tonight, and all three are looking bueno. Here's mañana.
Sunday, partly cloudy, eighty-eight for the high, seventy-three for the low, light south-southeast wind around seven, no rain. Water's eighty-nine. Monday and Tuesday stay around eighty-eight.
Peso Check, as of Friday: one U.S. dollar buys about eighteen point eight pesos, one Canadian dollar about thirteen point four. Your money goes a little further than last week.
Just remember, exchange houses and shops in town usually give a bit less than that, so check before you swap.
Now the good stuff. Surf!
NOAA's wave model has about six feet offshore tomorrow morning at thirteen seconds out of the southeast, and it's building.
Spot Check: Cerritos on the Pacific side, about five feet. The Corridor at Zippers and Old Man's shows the most, about six and a half. East Cape, about five and a half.
Those are offshore model numbers, not what's breaking at the beach, so check your spot. If it's over your head, enjoy it from the sand.
Fishing time, my favorite subject after naps on the rock.
Water's eighty-nine and tomorrow night is a full moon. Light wind in the morning, about seven, but that building swell means a little roll out there.
Que pasa Cabo is brought to you by Sancho's, on the marina between K and L Dock. You hook it, they cook it! Find them at @sanchoscabo on Facebook and Instagram.
According to Bisbee's, just fourteen blue marlin were recorded on the final day of the Black and Blue. Cantango Spartan's Revenge, the only qualifier with a four hundred ninety-one pound blue, is poised for a record payout.
Slow week, one giant fish. ¡Órale!
The final figure comes at tonight's awards banquet. And Día de Muertos Los Cabos on Playa El Médano starts in seven days.
Lots going on in town, amigos.
Tonight's show is presented by East Cape Concierge. Dreaming of marlin? They set up fishing charters, snorkeling days at Cabo Pulmo, a private chef at your casa, and rides from San José to Los Barriles. eastcapeconcierge.com.
